In a recent development, Google has issued an apology to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after an AI platform named Gemini, owned by the tech giant, generated controversial comments about the leader. The apology comes in response to a notice sent by the Indian government seeking an explanation for what it deems 'unsubstantiated' results provided by Gemini when queried about PM Modi. 
Minister of State for IT & Electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar revealed that Google acknowledged the unreliability of the Gemini platform in its response to the government's notice. This incident has prompted the Indian government to take a firm stance on the use of AI platforms in the country. It has announced that AI platforms must now obtain a permit to operate in India, emphasizing that the nation should not be a testing ground for such technologies.
The government's concern arises from the release of AI data onto the public internet without adequate testing or safeguards, leading to platforms providing unreliable information. The lack of consequences for such instances has raised alarms, with Google's Gemini cited as a violator for transitioning from the lab to the public internet without accountability.
Chandrasekhar emphasized that the government will not allow under-developed AI platforms to launch full-fledged services without transparent disclosures to users regarding the potential for misleading or false information. He underscored that AI platforms could face prosecution under Indian IT and criminal laws for violations and for spreading false information.
In response to these developments, the government has issued an advisory to AI-led startups, urging them to label unverified information as potentially false and error-prone. This move aligns with a previous notice addressing concerns about deepfakes circulating on social media and internet channels. The government's measures reflect its commitment to ensuring responsible AI deployment and protecting Indian consumers from unreliable or unlawful content generated by these platforms.
